Typical DIN-market applications
- Breweries, dairies and food plants: DIN 11851 and DIN 32676 hygienic connections.
- Building services and district heating: PN16 and PN25 flanged valves.
- Chemical and process plants: flanged and threaded valves with material numbers on drawings.
- Machinery and shipbuilding: compact valves with DIN threads and flanges.
If you send a drawing or a photo of your existing valve, we can confirm which DIN or EN dimensions apply, and quote a matching replacement.
Buyer tip: when ordering, give DN size, PN rating, flange type and facing, material number, and the connection standard in one line, for example "DN50 PN16 flat face, 1.4408, EN 558". A complete description like this removes most doubt and lets us confirm dimensions and price in a single reply.
DIN, EN and ISO: Which One Applies?
In practice, the three systems overlap, and many specifications mix them. The most helpful approach is to treat DIN as the traditional label, and EN and ISO as the standards that now define the dimensions. We follow the current standards while keeping DIN-compatible dimensions wherever the two agree.
| Area | Standard Reference |
|---|---|
| Flanges | EN 1092-1 (replaces DIN 2501), EN 1759-1 for Class flanges |
| Face-to-face dimensions | EN 558 (replaces DIN 3202), ISO 5752 |
| Valve design | EN 12516, EN 593 (butterfly), EN 12334 (check), EN 13709 (globe), EN 1984 (gate), ISO 17292 (ball) |
| Nominal pressure definition | EN 1333 |
| Materials | EN 10088 (stainless), EN 10213 (castings), EN 10222-5 (forgings), EN 10272 (bar) |
| Leakage tests | EN 12266-1, ISO 5208 |
| Marking | EN 19 |
| Threads | ISO 228, ISO 7-1 |
| Hygienic | DIN 11851, DIN 32676, DIN 11866, EHEDG guidelines |
| Pressure equipment regulation | Directive 2014/68/EU (PED) |
Compatibility note. PN16 flanges according to the old DIN 2501 and EN 1092-1 are dimensionally compatible for most sizes, which is why many buyers continue to use the DIN name. Some details, such as the number of bolts on certain sizes, have changed with EN, so we check drawing data for each project.
If your customer requires a specific DIN standard that has been withdrawn, we will tell you honestly whether we can still follow it, and what the closest current reference is.
Reference note: withdrawn DIN standards may still be named in older project specifications and maintenance manuals. When we meet such a reference, we identify the current EN or ISO standard, mark it in the data sheet and ask for your confirmation, so both sides work from the same dimensions and requirements.
Certificates and CE Documentation for DIN-Market Buyers
In Germany and many EU countries, valves above certain size and pressure limits fall under the Pressure Equipment Directive, and buyers expect documents that match the German or European way of working. We prepare such documents and adapt the wording to the material numbers used in the DIN world.
- Material certificates: EN 10204 3.1 using material numbers, such as 1.4408 for CF8M, with chemistry and mechanical properties.
- CE marking and declaration of conformity: for qualifying models, with PED category and module.
- Test report: shell and seat test to EN 12266-1, with leakage rate class.
- Dimensional report: flange drilling and face-to-face length to EN 1092-1 and EN 558.
- Hygienic documents: surface finish, passivation and compliance statements for DIN 11851 and DIN 32676 products.
- Food contact: declaration of conformity with Regulation (EC) 1935/2004 for stainless steel and seals, on request.
- Drinking water: compliance statements for seal materials, on request.
- Quality management: ISO 9001 style system and batch records.
- Third-party inspection: notified bodies, TUV, SGS, BV or the customer's own inspector.
Language of documents. We can provide documents in English, and many customers accept them as such. For specific projects that require German terms, we can add bilingual headings to certificates and test reports.
A sample documentation pack is available before order confirmation.
Audit tip: keep the EN 10204 3.1 certificate, the declaration of conformity and the test report together for each delivery, listing the material number and the leakage rate class. German and EU auditors often check these three items first, and a complete set shortens the review and builds confidence in the supply chain.
Material Numbers and Traceability in DIN Practice
German material numbers such as 1.4301 and 1.4404 are a core part of DIN practice. They are short, exact and widely understood. Traceability in this tradition means that the material number, the heat number and the certificate always travel together with the valve.
- Material numbers on drawings: we confirm the material number against the American grade, such as 1.4408 for CF8M.
- Mill certificates: EN 10204 3.1 documents show the material number, standard and chemistry.
- PMI check: XRF analysis verifies the grade for incoming parts and sampled valves.
- Marking: body carries DN, PN, material number or grade, heat number and manufacturer mark per EN 19.
- Test records: leakage test results are linked to the valve serial number.
- Document package: certificates and reports carry the same identification as the valve.
| German Material Number | Typical Equivalent | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1.4301 | 304 (wrought) | General purpose austenitic |
| 1.4308 | CF8 (cast 304) | Cast equivalent of 1.4301 |
| 1.4401 | 316 (wrought) | Contains molybdenum |
| 1.4404 | 316L (wrought) | Low carbon, weldable |
| 1.4408 | CF8M (cast 316) | Common cast valve body grade |
| 1.4409 | CF3M (cast 316L) | Low-carbon cast grade |
| 1.4571 | 316Ti | Stabilised with titanium |
Equivalents are close but not always identical, because chemical limits differ slightly between standards. If your specification requires the EN grade strictly, tell us, and we will certify the material to that standard.
Why equivalents are checked: grades with similar names can differ in small chemical limits, which matters for corrosion resistance and for welding. If your drawing names a material number, we certify to that exact grade and standard, and do not simply supply the nearest American equivalent without telling you.
Testing to EN 12266 and DIN-Style Leakage Classes
The European test standard EN 12266-1 replaced DIN 3230. It uses leakage rates labelled A to G, which are easy to understand once you know the logic: A is the tightest, with no visible leakage, and the letters descend to G, which allows more leakage.
| Leakage Rate | Typical Meaning | Typical Valve |
|---|---|---|
| Rate A | No visible leakage during the test | Soft-seated ball and butterfly valves |
| Rate B | Very small leakage, in the order of a few drops or bubbles | Tight metal-seated valves |
| Rate C and D | Small allowable leakage, scaled by size | Metal-seated gate, globe and check valves |
| Rate E to G | Larger allowable leakage | Control valves and special duties |
Our test plan for DIN-market orders
| Test | Typical Value or Method | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Shell test | Hydrostatic at 1.5 x PN, per EN 12266-1 | 100% of valves |
| Seat test, liquid | 1.1 x PN, with leakage rate stated | 100% of valves |
| Seat test, air | Air at low pressure under water | 100% of soft-seated valves |
| Flange dimension check | Drilling templates and calipers per EN 1092-1 | First article and sampling |
| Face-to-face check | Calipers per EN 558 | Sampling |
| PMI | XRF analyser | Incoming and sampling |
| Surface roughness | For hygienic valves, portable profilometer | Sampling |
| Passivation check | Copper sulfate or ferroxyl test | Per batch |
Specify the leakage rate. If you only write "DIN tested", we apply EN 12266-1 and choose a rate that suits the seat, normally rate A for soft seats and rate C or D for metal seats. If your specification needs a specific rate, say so in the inquiry. Customers are welcome to witness testing.
Frequently Asked Questions about DIN Standard Valves
Q: Are DIN standards still valid?
Many have been replaced by EN or ISO standards, but the DIN labels remain common in practice. Dimensions often stay the same, so valves described as DIN are usually built to the matching EN standard.
Q: Is a DIN PN16 flange the same as an EN PN16 flange?
For most sizes they are dimensionally compatible, but some details differ, such as bolt count on certain sizes. We check drawing data for each project.
Q: What is DIN 11851?
It is a threaded hygienic connection with a slotted nut, widely used in dairies, breweries and food plants in Europe. Dimensions are set by DN size, and the sealing is by a profiled gasket.
Q: What is the difference between DIN 11851 and DIN 32676?
DIN 11851 uses a threaded union nut and is common in dairies. DIN 32676 is a clamp connection, equivalent to ISO 2852, preferred where fast assembly is needed.
Q: What is the meaning of 1.4408?
It is the German material number for cast stainless steel similar to CF8M, which is a cast version of 316. It is the most common body material for cast valves in Europe.
Q: Can you supply valves with German markings?
We mark valves with DN, PN, material number and manufacturer mark per EN 19. If you need specific markings, please send the specification.
Q: Do you supply CE-marked valves?
Yes, for qualifying models under the Pressure Equipment Directive. Please tell us the size, pressure and medium group, and we will confirm the category and documents.

What affects the price
- Material: 1.4408 and 1.4404 cost more than 1.4308 and 1.4301.
- PN rating: PN40 is heavier and costs more than PN16.
- Hygienic finish: polished or electropolished DIN 11851 and DIN 32676 parts cost more.
- CE and documents: CE marking and extended documents add cost.
- Seat and seals: PTFE, EPDM and FKM have different prices.
Replacement parts business. Many DIN valves are bought to replace existing ones. If you send us the old valve data or photos, we can quote a direct replacement quickly and confirm fit before production.
Ordering advice: if you run a distribution business in a DIN market, start with a stock list of PN16 flanged ball valves, wafer butterfly valves and DIN 11851 fittings in popular sizes. Review sales each season, and add PN25, PN40 and special items as demand shows up, which keeps stock lean and capital working.
