JIS Pressure Ratings, Flanges and Material Names
| JIS Rating | Approximate Pressure | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| 5K | About 0.5 MPa (5 kgf/cm2) | Low-pressure water, drainage, air |
| 10K | About 1.0 MPa (10 kgf/cm2) | General water, air, steam at low pressure, utility |
| 16K | About 1.6 MPa (16 kgf/cm2) | Higher-pressure utility and process |
| 20K | About 2.0 MPa (20 kgf/cm2) | Process, steam, oil and chemical lines |
| 30K and 40K | About 3.0 and 4.0 MPa | High-pressure service |
The "K" refers to kilograms-force per square centimetre, an older pressure unit. The allowable pressure of a stainless steel flange or valve depends on material and temperature, and falls as the line gets hot. We provide the exact rating table for the grade supplied.
Flange dimension example compared with other standards
| Standard | Nominal Size | Flange OD (mm) | Bolt Circle (mm) | Bolts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JIS B2220 10K | 50A | 155 | 120 | 4 x hole 19 mm |
| EN 1092-1 PN16 | DN50 | 165 | 125 | 4 x hole 18 mm |
| ASME B16.5 Class 150 | 2 inch | 152.4 | 120.7 | 4 x hole 19.1 mm |
| JIS B2220 10K | 100A | 210 | 175 | 8 x hole 19 mm |
| EN 1092-1 PN16 | DN100 | 220 | 180 | 8 x hole 18 mm |
| ASME B16.5 Class 150 | 4 inch | 228.6 | 190.5 | 8 x hole 19.1 mm |
Close, but not the same. These flanges look similar at small sizes, and people sometimes try to force a JIS flange onto an ASME or EN counterpart. Outside diameter, bolt circle, bolt size and hole position all differ slightly, so mixing them risks leaks and damaged bolts. Always match JIS to JIS.
| JIS Name | Typical Equivalent | Form |
|---|---|---|
| SUS304 | 304 / 1.4301 | Wrought, bar and plate |
| SUS316 | 316 / 1.4401 | Wrought, bar and plate |
| SUS316L | 316L / 1.4404 | Wrought, low carbon |
| SCS13 | CF8 / cast 304 | Casting |
| SCS14 | CF8M / cast 316 | Casting |
| SCS16 | CF3M / cast 316L | Casting, low carbon |

If you send a drawing in millimetres with JIS notation, we can quote directly from it and confirm the thread or flange standard in our reply.
Japanese Industrial Standards We Work With
JIS standards cover valves, flanges, threads and materials in detail. Some of them have equivalents in ISO or ASME, but dimensions and naming are often different. We use the references below, and we confirm the edition in each quotation.
| Area | Standard Reference |
|---|---|
| Steel pipe flanges | JIS B2220 (5K to 63K) |
| Steel valves, flanged | JIS B2071 and related valve standards |
| Face-to-face dimensions | JIS B2002 |
| Valve inspection | JIS B2003 (general rules for inspection of valves) |
| Taper pipe threads | JIS B0203 (PT), equivalent to ISO 7-1 (Rc, R) |
| Parallel pipe threads | JIS B0202 (PF), similar to ISO 228-1 (G) |
| Stainless steel castings | JIS G5121 (SCS grades) |
| Stainless steel bar | JIS G4303 (SUS bar) |
| Stainless steel plate | JIS G4304, G4305 |
| Stainless steel pipe | JIS G3459 |
| Butterfly valves | JIS B2032 (wafer type, rubber seated) and project specifications |
Korean and Taiwanese equivalents. Korean standards (KS) and Taiwanese standards (CNS) are largely based on JIS and use the same K ratings for flanges. We can supply valves to KS B or CNS dimensions in most cases, and we will confirm which standard applies when you give us the project country and specification.
If your project specification refers to an older JIS version, please give the year. Dimensions of common sizes seldom change, but details such as bolt hole size or marking can differ between editions.
Reference note: JIS standards are revised from time to time, and some product standards are now harmonised with ISO. If your specification names a JIS number, please add the year or the revision. We will confirm that our drawing and test method follow that version, and flag any difference before production starts.
Documents for JIS-Market Buyers
Japanese and Korean buyers often ask for documents in a particular order, with clear numbering and signature. They also read details closely. We prepare the following documents with that in mind, and we can arrange them according to the format your quality department uses.
- Mill sheet or material certificate: EN 10204 3.1 with JIS grade names, such as SCS14 or SUS316L, plus equivalent international grade.
- Pressure test report: shell and seat tests, with test pressure, duration, medium and result, in line with JIS B2003 or the customer standard.
- Dimensional inspection report: flange drilling, face-to-face length and thread gauge results.
- Surface treatment record: pickling and passivation, with test result.
- Hygienic documents: roughness, passivation and food contact statements for sanitary valves.
- Quality management: ISO 9001 style system and batch records.
- Packing list and shipping documents: with clear item numbering, matched to your purchase order.
- Third-party inspection: SGS, BV, TUV or the buyer's own inspector can attend testing and final inspection.
Appearance counts. In JIS markets, surface finish, marking sharpness and packaging neatness influence acceptance. We therefore inspect valves visually before packing, and we aim at a clean, uniform look.
Some Japanese approvals, such as JIS marks or JWWA for waterworks, apply to specific products and factories. If your project needs them, tell us at inquiry stage, and we will say whether we can supply approved items or only dimensionally equivalent items.
Audit tip: keep the mill sheet, the pressure test report and the dimensional report together for each lot, and note the JIS grade name on the cover sheet. Japanese and Korean auditors usually check material, pressure test and dimensions in that order, and a tidy set shortens the review and builds trust in the supplier.
Traceability and Marking in JIS Practice
JIS buyers place high value on traceability and on clean, permanent markings. They expect to read grade, size and rating on the valve body without opening a document. Our marking and records are designed so that this works in practice.
- Body marking: nominal size (such as 50A), pressure rating (such as 10K), material grade (SCS14) and manufacturer mark are cast or stamped on the body.
- Heat number: cast or stamped on the body and linked to the mill sheet.
- PMI check: XRF analysis verifies material on incoming parts and sampled valves.
- Thread and flange records: first article inspection data for each production lot, with gauge results.
- Test records: pressure test results are linked to valve serial numbers or lot numbers.
- Packing records: carton labels show size, rating, material and lot, and match the packing list.
| Marking | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 50A | Nominal diameter in millimetres |
| Rating | 10K | Nominal pressure in kgf/cm2 |
| Material | SCS14 | Cast stainless steel, 316 type |
| Heat number | Alphanumeric code | Link to mill sheet |
| Manufacturer mark | KSL | Producer identification |
Where customers require additional marking, such as asset number, order number or a bar code, we can add it by laser marking or a separate label.
Why neat marking matters: in JIS markets, a valve with clear, even marking is read as a sign of careful production. Our marking positions are chosen so that size, rating and grade are visible after installation, and they are inspected visually for sharpness and completeness before the valve is packed and shipped.
Testing and Inspection to JIS Practice
JIS B2003 describes general rules for valve inspection, including shell tests and seat tests. Our testing follows the same logic, and we adapt pressure values and hold times to the rating of each valve. We also check dimensions with JIS gauges.
| Test | Typical Value or Method | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Shell test | Hydrostatic at 1.5 x rated pressure | 100% of valves |
| Seat test, liquid | Hydrostatic at 1.1 x rated pressure | 100% of valves |
| Seat test, air | Low-pressure air under water | 100% of soft-seated valves |
| Flange drilling check | JIS templates and calipers for OD, bolt circle and hole size | First article and sampling |
| Thread inspection | PT taper gauge and PF go / no-go gauge | First article and sampling |
| Face-to-face check | Calipers per JIS B2002 | Sampling |
| PMI | XRF analyser | Incoming and sampling |
| Surface check | Visual inspection for scratches, marks and pickling quality | 100% of valves |
| Passivation check | Copper sulfate or ferroxyl test | Per batch |
Thread gauges are different. JIS PT threads are close to BSPT and ISO 7 taper threads, and JIS PF threads are close to BSPP parallel threads, but dimensions differ in details and tolerances. We use gauges that match JIS standards, not general-purpose gauges, so the thread fit corresponds to your expectation.
Customers are welcome to attend testing, and we can send gauge photos and test videos on request.
Reading the gauge results: thread inspection data shows the gauge position on the taper thread, which tells us whether the thread is cut within tolerance. We keep these values for the first article and for sampled valves, and we can send them to you on request for your own incoming inspection.
Frequently Asked Questions about JIS Standard Valves
Q: What does 10K mean?
It is a pressure rating in the JIS system, about 10 kgf/cm2 or roughly 1.0 MPa at room temperature. The usable pressure falls at higher temperature and depends on material.
Q: Is JIS 10K the same as PN10?
They are close in pressure level, but not the same, and flange dimensions differ. A JIS 10K flange will not generally bolt to an EN PN10 flange.
Q: Can a JIS 10K flange fit an ASME Class 150 flange?
At some sizes they look similar, but outside diameter, bolt circle and bolt size are not identical. It is not recommended, so use matching flanges or dual-drilled valves where required.
Q: What is the difference between PT and PF threads?
PT is a taper thread that seals on the thread, and PF is a parallel thread that seals on a gasket or washer. They correspond approximately to BSPT and BSPP.
Q: What do SCS13 and SCS14 mean?
They are JIS names for cast stainless steel. SCS13 is close to CF8 or cast 304, and SCS14 is close to CF8M or cast 316.
Q: Do you make valves to Korean KS standards?
In most cases, yes. KS flanges and many valve dimensions follow JIS practice. Please send the KS standard number and the size list.
Q: Can you supply dual-drilled butterfly valves?
Yes. Wafer and lug valves can be drilled for JIS 10K and another standard, such as EN PN10 or ASME 150, if the size allows. We confirm drilling before production.

Long-term relationships. Many JIS customers prefer stable supply and fixed specifications over price chasing. We are glad to agree drawings and specifications once, keep them on file, and quote repeat orders quickly with the same standard.
Ordering advice: for distributors, a starter assortment of 10K threaded ball valves in the popular sizes, plus flanged 10K valves for 50A to 100A, covers many customer requests. Review sales after a season, and add 20K and special items as demand appears, which keeps stock under control and customers satisfied.
Lead Time, Customisation, Packaging and Trade Terms

We can consolidate JIS valves with other stainless valves and fittings in one container, and deliver to Japanese, Korean and Southeast Asian ports.
Handling advice: keep thread and flange protectors in place until installation, apply sealant suited to stainless steel, and avoid over-tightening PT threads, since a taper thread can crack a female end if forced too far. We include a short installation note with shipments on request, in English or with Japanese terms for key items.
