Grooved End Dimensions and Technical Parameters
| Nominal Size | Pipe Outside Diameter (mm) | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 1/2 inch (DN40) | 48.3 | Branch lines, small equipment |
| 2 inch (DN50) | 60.3 | Branch lines and risers |
| 2 1/2 inch (DN65) | 73.0 | Branch and header lines |
| 3 inch (DN80) | 88.9 | Headers and equipment connections |
| 4 inch (DN100) | 114.3 | Main lines |
| 6 inch (DN150) | 168.3 | Main lines and plant risers |
| 8 inch (DN200) | 219.1 | Large headers |
These outside diameters follow the standard steel pipe size system used by most grooved couplings. Light-wall stainless pipe and tube may have a different outside diameter, so always confirm the pipe OD before ordering.

Rating of the joint, not only the valve. A grooved joint is rated by the coupling, the groove and the pipe wall together. A valve may be rated higher than the coupling attached to it, so the lowest rating decides. We state the valve rating and ask you to confirm the coupling rating for your system.
Grooved Valve Range and Coupling Compatibility
Grooved piping is a system. To finish a job, contractors need valves, couplings, fittings, gaskets and hangers. We focus on the valves and related stainless products, and we help you to match them with couplings from your preferred supplier.
| Product | Size Range | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| Grooved ball valve | 1 1/2 inch to 4 inch | On-off service in water, air and chemical lines |
| Grooved butterfly valve, lever operated | DN40 to DN150 | Chilled water and HVAC |
| Grooved butterfly valve, gear operated | DN150 to DN200 | Large headers and plant rooms |
| Grooved butterfly valve, actuated | DN40 to DN200 | Automated process and fire protection systems |
| Grooved check valve | DN40 to DN200 | Pump discharge and backflow prevention |
| Grooved Y-strainer | DN40 to DN200 | Pump and equipment protection |
| Grooved nipple and adaptors | DN40 to DN200 | Connecting grooved lines to flanged or threaded equipment |
| Flange adaptors | DN40 to DN200 | Transition from grooved pipe to flanged valves |
Why contractors choose grooved valves
- Speed: a trained crew can install a coupling in minutes, compared to hours for welding.
- No hot work: lower fire risk and no welding permits, which suits occupied buildings.
- Easy maintenance: a joint can be opened and closed repeatedly without damaging the pipe.
- Tolerance to movement: flexible couplings absorb vibration, thermal movement and small misalignment.
Where a rigid joint is needed, rigid couplings can be used with the same grooved valves, and we can supply the guidance on coupling type for your layout.
Buyer tip: when you list grooved items, include the pipe material, wall thickness, coupling brand and series, and whether the joint should be rigid or flexible. A few extra lines in the inquiry let us cut the right groove and recommend the correct valve, and they prevent expensive rework on site.
Groove, Valve and Coupling Standards
Grooved connections are covered by groove standards, coupling performance standards and valve design standards. Because the coupling profile varies between manufacturers, it is important to define the groove profile used by your project.
| Area | Standard Reference |
|---|---|
| Groove dimensions for steel pipe | ANSI/AWWA C606 (grooved and shouldered joints) |
| Coupling performance | ASTM F1476 and manufacturer performance data |
| Pipe standards | ASTM A312, A778, A53; ASME B36.19M and B36.10M; EN 10217-7 |
| Butterfly valve design | API 609, EN 593, MSS SP-67 where applicable |
| Ball valve design | ISO 17292, MSS SP-110 |
| Check valve design | API 594, EN 12334 |
| Pressure-temperature ratings | ASME B16.34 where applicable, manufacturer ratings for rubber seats |
| Actuator interface | ISO 5211 |
| Testing | API 598, EN 12266-1, ISO 5208 |
Groove profile matters. Different coupling makers use slightly different grooves, such as standard roll groove, cut groove and special profiles for light-wall pipe. A coupling from one supplier may not hold properly on a groove made for another. Please tell us the coupling brand and series that you plan to use, and we will cut the groove to match.
If your project requires fire protection approvals, such as UL, FM or VdS, tell us at the inquiry stage. Approvals apply to specific models and sizes, and we confirm which products can be supplied with them.
Reference note: the AWWA C606 groove standard was written for steel and ductile iron pipe, so light-wall stainless pipe often uses manufacturer-specific roll groove data. If your pipe is thin-wall stainless, send the wall thickness and the coupling data sheet, and we will check the groove dimensions against them before cutting.
Certificates and Approvals for Grooved Valves
Grooved valves are used in building services and fire protection, where documents often include both material proof and system approvals. We organise them so that your engineer can verify compliance quickly and your inspector can find what is required.
- Material certificate: EN 10204 3.1 for body, disc and stem, with heat numbers.
- Groove inspection report: groove diameter, width and depth measured on sampled valves against the coupling specification.
- Pressure test report: shell and seat tests per API 598 or EN 12266-1.
- Seat compliance: statements for EPDM, FDA, EU or WRAS and NSF 61 where required for drinking water or food.
- Fire protection approvals: UL, FM or VdS on selected models, on request.
- CE and PED: for qualifying models.
- Quality management: ISO 9001 style system and batch records.
- Third-party inspection: SGS, BV, TUV or the buyer's inspector may witness testing.
Approvals are model specific. A grooved butterfly valve with a fire protection approval is a different product from a general-purpose one, even when they look similar. Please state your approval needs at the inquiry stage, to avoid being offered a valve that does not meet the project specification.
A sample documentation pack can be sent for review before an order is confirmed.
Audit tip: keep the groove inspection report together with the coupling data sheet in the project file. If a joint is ever questioned, these two documents show quickly whether the groove, the coupling and the pipe were compatible, and they save time during both warranty reviews and routine system inspections.
Traceability for Grooved Valves
The groove is a precision machined feature, so traceability must connect the valve to both its material and its machining record. If a joint leaks, the first question is whether the groove was within tolerance, and the second is whether the coupling and gasket were suitable. Good records make these questions quick to answer.
- Material: body and disc heat numbers are recorded, with mill certificates and PMI checks at receiving.
- Groove machining: groove programmes are labelled by pipe size and profile type, and first article inspection is completed before each run.
- In-process checks: groove diameter and depth are sampled with gauges at regular intervals, and results are logged.
- Seat batch: rubber compound batch, cure date and hardness are recorded.
- Marking: size, material grade and heat number are on the body, with groove profile on the carton label.
- Final record: serial numbers link valves to test reports and shipping documents.
| Item | Record | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Body | Heat number and certificate | Proof of grade |
| Groove | Dimension report and gauge result | Proof of coupling fit |
| Disc and stem | PMI and lot number | Corrosion and strength |
| Seat | Compound batch and cure date | Sealing and compatibility |
| Carton | Size, profile and lot | Prevents mix-ups |
If a field problem arises, we can compare your coupling and pipe measurements with our groove record, and find the cause without guesswork.
Why groove records matter: if a joint weeps after commissioning, the cause may be the groove, the gasket, the coupling or the pipe. Having recorded groove measurements for the lot lets us exclude one possible cause quickly, and helps your contractor concentrate on the real problem rather than replacing parts one by one.
Groove Inspection and Valve Testing Capability
Grooved valves are pressure tested like any other valve, but the groove itself also needs control. We combine standard shell and seat tests with dimensional checks of the groove, and with torque tests on the operating mechanism.
| Test | Method | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Shell test | Hydrostatic at 1.5 times rated pressure | 100% of valves |
| Seat test | Hydrostatic at 1.1 times rated pressure, plus low-pressure air test for resilient seats | 100% of valves |
| Groove diameter and depth | Go and no-go gauges, calipers | First article and sampling |
| Groove width and gasket seat | Groove gauge and visual inspection | Sampling |
| Pipe end surface check | Visual inspection for burrs and scratches on the gasket seat | 100% of valves |
| Operating torque | Torque tester at stem or actuator pad | Sampling, 100% for actuated valves |
| PMI | XRF analyser for body and disc | Incoming and sampling |
| Coupling fit test | Trial assembly with customer coupling on sample valves | On request |
Gasket seat condition: the area where the coupling gasket sits must be smooth and free of scratches, because a rough or damaged seat can leak even when the groove dimensions are perfect. We protect the groove during machining and packing and inspect it visually before shipment.
If you send us a coupling sample, we can run a trial assembly and share photos of the fit before mass production starts.
Trial assembly service: for large projects, we can mount your coupling on a sample valve and send photos of the assembled joint, including the gap between coupling halves and the position of the bolt pads. It takes little time and removes doubts about fit before hundreds of valves are produced.
Frequently Asked Questions about Grooved End Valves
Q: What is the difference between roll groove and cut groove?
Roll grooving forms the groove without removing metal and suits thin-wall pipe, including stainless. Cut grooving removes metal and needs a thicker wall. Valve ends are usually machined, but the groove profile follows the coupling standard.
Q: Can I use any coupling with your valve?
Standard grooves fit couplings that follow the same profile. Some manufacturers use special profiles, so please give us the coupling brand and series, and we will confirm.
Q: What pressure can a grooved joint handle?
Typical ratings are 16 to 20 bar, but they depend on size, coupling model and pipe wall. The weakest element decides the system rating.
Q: Is a grooved joint rigid or flexible?
It depends on the coupling. Flexible couplings allow small angular movement and absorb vibration, and rigid couplings lock the joint and limit movement. Both can be used with the same valve.
Q: Can stainless steel pipe be grooved?
Yes. Stainless pipe in Schedule 10S is commonly roll grooved. The pipe wall and ovality must be within tolerance, and special stainless couplings or coated couplings may be chosen for corrosive environments.
Q: Are grooved valves suitable for fire protection?
Only models with the specific approval, such as UL or FM, should be used in fire protection systems. Tell us the requirement and we will advise.
Q: Do I need extra gaskets?
The coupling has its own gasket. The valve seat is a separate seal. We recommend ordering spare coupling gaskets from your coupling supplier together with the valves.
MOQ and Pricing for Grooved Valves
Grooved valves are used heavily in building projects, so quantities vary from a few pieces for maintenance to hundreds for new construction. Our terms are designed to fit both.
| Item | Typical Terms |
|---|---|
| Sample order | 1 to 3 pieces per model |
| Standard MOQ | 20 to 50 pieces per size, mixed sizes accepted |
| Custom groove profile | 100 pieces or more, depending on tooling |
| Actuated valves | Small quantities accepted; actuator brand and voltage to be specified |
| Pricing basis | EXW, FOB Ningbo, CFR or CIF in USD |
| Quote validity | 30 days, adjusted for stainless steel price changes |
| Payment | 30% T/T deposit, 70% before shipment; L/C at sight for approved accounts |
What affects price
- Valve type: grooved ball valves are priced differently from grooved butterfly valves.
- Size: weight and machining time rise with size.
- Material: 316L and duplex cost more than 304.
- Seat and trim: PTFE and FKM are above EPDM and NBR.
- Approvals: fire protection approvals add cost to the product.
Total installed cost: grooved systems save labour, so even when the valve costs a little more than a flanged valve, the installed cost may be lower. We can help you compare options for a specific project when you send us the layout.
Ordering advice: standardise on a few sizes and one groove profile across your project, so that spare valves and couplings can be shared between different areas. It simplifies purchasing, reduces site inventory, and makes it easier for the maintenance team to find the right replacement years later.
Lead Time, Customisation, Packaging and Trade Terms
Lead time and stock
Popular sizes of grooved butterfly valves and ball valves are partly kept in semi-finished stock, so standard orders can ship in 20 to 30 days. Actuated assemblies, special groove profiles or approval models need 35 to 55 days. We can split deliveries to match your site progress.
Customisation
We can customise groove profile, pipe size series, body material, disc material, seat material, operator, handle colour, coating and marking. If your couplings follow a special design, send drawings or a sample.
Packaging
- Groove protected by plastic or foam covers to avoid scratches
- Butterfly valves packed with the disc slightly open
- Individual cartons for small sizes, wooden cases or pallets for larger sizes
- Labels with size, profile type, material and lot number
