Why mixing NPT and BSP is a problem: NPT has a 60° thread angle and BSP has 55°. In small sizes, one may screw partially into the other, which gives a false feeling of a good connection. Under pressure it leaks, and tightening harder damages both parts.
Female and male options: most threaded ball valves have female threads on both ends, but we can also make male by female, male by male and union-end designs. State the required gender of each end in your inquiry, because the choice changes the body design, the length and the price.
Threaded Valve and Fitting Range for One-Stop Orders
Threaded connections are used in pipelines, skids, instrument lines, water systems and many types of machinery. Buyers often need several valve types and fittings with the same thread, and it is much simpler to get them from one factory than to match batches from different suppliers.
| Product | Size Range | Available Threads |
|---|---|---|
| 2-piece and 3-piece ball valves | 1/4 inch to 4 inch | NPT, BSPT, BSPP |
| Mini ball valves | 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch | NPT, BSPP, metric |
| Needle valves | 1/8 inch to 1 inch | NPT, BSPP |
| Globe and gate valves | 1/2 inch to 4 inch | NPT, BSPT |
| Check valves, lift and swing | 1/4 inch to 4 inch | NPT, BSPT, BSPP |
| Y-strainers | 1/4 inch to 4 inch | NPT, BSPT, BSPP |
| Unions, nipples, elbows, tees | 1/8 inch to 4 inch | NPT, BSPT, BSPP |
| Pneumatic and electric actuated ball valves | 1/4 inch to 4 inch | NPT, BSPT, BSPP |
Benefits of ordering threaded products together
- Thread match: parts in the same order are made and gauged to the same standard.
- Lower freight: mixed items share cartons and pallets.
- One set of documents: a single certificate pack for the shipment.
- Faster installation: valves, fittings and strainers arrive ready to be assembled.
If your pipeline includes dual-thread items, such as a valve with one NPT end and one BSP end, or adapters between standards, we can supply those too, clearly marked so installers cannot confuse them.
Interchangeability note: within one thread standard, different suppliers normally fit together, but surface finish and thread length vary. Because our valves, unions and fittings are checked with the same gauges, they match better than parts collected from several sources, which reduces leaks during commissioning.
Thread and Valve Standards for NPT and BSP Products
Thread quality is defined by standards for the thread form, the tolerance and the gauging method. We cut and inspect threads according to the following references, and we can match other national standards on request.
| Area | Standard Reference |
|---|---|
| NPT pipe threads | ASME B1.20.1 |
| BSPT pipe threads | ISO 7-1, EN 10226-1, BS 21 |
| BSPP pipe threads | ISO 228-1, BS 2779 |
| Japanese pipe threads | JIS B0203 (PT), JIS B0202 (PF) |
| Threaded fittings | ASME B16.11, ASME B16.3 for related classes |
| Ball valve design | ISO 17292, MSS SP-110, BS 5351 |
| Gate, globe and check valve design | API 602, BS 5352, EN 12334 |
| Pressure and temperature ratings | ASME B16.34 |
| Actuator interface | ISO 5211 |
| Testing | API 598, EN 12266-1, ISO 5208 |
Always state the thread standard. Writing "1/2 inch thread" is not enough. Please specify NPT, BSPT or BSPP, and, for BSP, whether the female thread is parallel (Rp or G) or taper (Rc). We will repeat it in the order confirmation and mark it on the product, so every party works from the same requirement.
If your piping uses a rare thread, such as BSPP with a gasket face, or ISO metric with an O-ring, send us a drawing or a sample for confirmation before production.
Tolerance classes: BSPP threads have tolerance classes A and B for external threads, and a single class for internal threads. If your equipment requires a specific class, such as G class B, mention it in the inquiry so that gauges and process control are set accordingly.
Certificates and Documentation for Threaded Valves
Threaded valves are widely used in water, fuel, chemical and food applications, so documentation is often requested for both material and performance. The following items can be supplied depending on the order.
- Material certificate: EN 10204 3.1 for body and trim material with chemical composition.
- Thread inspection report: gauge results for sampled valves, listing thread type and tolerance class.
- Pressure test report: shell and seat test per API 598 or EN 12266-1.
- Fire safe test report: on selected ball valve models with fire safe design.
- Drinking water approval: NSF 61 or WRAS approved seal materials for selected models, on request.
- Food contact declaration: for valves with FDA and EU compliant seal materials.
- CE marking: for qualifying models under the Pressure Equipment Directive.
- Quality management: ISO 9001 style system and batch records.
Match the documents to the market: a distributor in the United States will often ask for NPT threads, NSF or UL related documents and ASME compliance. A buyer in Europe may want BSP, CE marking and WRAS. If you tell us the destination country and the application, we will suggest the right documents and models.
Not all approvals apply to all sizes and models, so please ask early to avoid delays in final documentation.
Document hint: distributors who resell into several countries often ask for a flexible package. We can prepare one standard document set that lists the thread types, the material certificates and the test results, so you can reuse it with different customers without asking us each time.
Material and Thread Traceability
For threaded valves, traceability has two parts: the material and the thread. The material part follows the usual route from mill certificate to finished valve. The thread part is about proving that each batch was cut to the right standard and checked with the right gauge, which is the point where many cross-border errors begin.
- Material receiving: heat numbers are recorded and PMI is carried out on incoming material.
- Thread programme control: CNC programmes and tooling are labelled by thread type, such as NPT, BSPT and BSPP, and kept separate.
- First article check: before each production run, the first valve is checked with the correct gauge by the inspector.
- In-process sampling: threads are checked at intervals during the run, and tool wear is controlled.
- Marking: thread type is stamped or laser marked on the body or carton, and heat number on the body.
- Packing control: cartons are labelled by thread type and checked against the order before closing.
| Control Point | What Is Recorded | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Heat number | Mill certificate link | Proof of grade |
| Thread programme | Thread type and tool number | Prevents NPT and BSP mix-ups |
| First article | Gauge result and signature | Confirms setup before production |
| In-process sampling | Gauge results at intervals | Detects tool wear |
| Carton label | Thread type, size and quantity | Prevents wrong shipments |
A mix-up of thread types is one of the most common and most costly mistakes in threaded valve supply. These controls exist to make sure it does not happen to you.
Thread Inspection and Valve Testing Capability
We inspect threads and valves at several stages. Gauges confirm that the thread fits, and pressure tests confirm that the valve holds. Both are necessary, since a good valve with a poor thread still leaks at the pipe joint.
| Test | Method | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| NPT thread inspection | L1 and L2 ring and plug gauges per ASME B1.20.1 | First article and sampling |
| BSPT thread inspection | Taper gauges per ISO 7-1 | First article and sampling |
| BSPP thread inspection | GO and NO-GO gauges per ISO 228-1 | First article and sampling |
| Thread surface check | Visual inspection and surface finish check for burrs and tears | 100% of valves |
| Shell test | Hydrostatic test at 1.5 times rated pressure | 100% of valves |
| Seat test | Hydrostatic test at 1.1 times rated pressure and low-pressure air test | 100% of valves |
| Torque test | Operating torque measurement on sample valves | Sampling |
| PMI | XRF analysis of body material | Incoming material and sampling |
| Assembly test | Sealing test with PTFE tape on a test fitting | Type test or on request |
What the gauges tell us: a taper thread gauge checks how far the gauge enters the thread, which controls the stand-off position. If the thread is cut too shallow or too deep, the connection will not seat properly, even if the pitch is right. That is why we use dedicated gauges and not only calipers.
If you wish, we can send photos of gauge inspection for your order, or you can bring your own gauge for witness inspection at our factory.
Frequently Asked Questions about NPT and BSP Threaded Valves
Q: What is the difference between NPT and BSP?
NPT has a 60° thread angle and always tapers. BSP has a 55° angle and comes in a taper form (BSPT) and a parallel form (BSPP). They have different pitches in many sizes and should not be mixed.
Q: Can I connect an NPT valve to a BSP pipe?
No, not reliably. The thread angle and pitch differ, so the joint may seem tight at first and then leak. Use matching threads or a proper adapter.
Q: How do BSPT and BSPP seal?
BSPT is a taper thread and seals on the thread itself with sealant or tape. BSPP is parallel and seals on a gasket, O-ring or washer face, not on the thread.
Q: How do I know which thread I need?
Check the existing pipe or fitting, the standard of your market, and the equipment brand. If in doubt, send us a photo or a sample thread, and we will identify it for you.
Q: What sealant should I use?
PTFE tape or a suitable thread sealant is typical for taper threads. Use tape that is rated for stainless steel and the medium, and apply it correctly, without covering the first thread.
Q: Can you make valves with different threads on each end?
Yes. We can make valves with one end NPT and the other BSP, or with metric adapters. They are clearly marked and packed separately.
Q: Why did my stainless threaded valve seize on the pipe?
Stainless steel threads can gall when tightened dry. Use thread lubricant or PTFE tape, avoid over-tightening, and keep threads clean. We can also supply valves with lubricated threads on request.

Annual agreement: if you buy the same valves regularly, a frame agreement can lock the price for several months and let us schedule production and shipping. Share your forecast and we will propose terms suited to your sales rhythm.
Buying advice: to lower stock risk, choose a core set of sizes and one or two thread types for each market, and order less common sizes and threads on demand. We can suggest a starter assortment based on your market and the sales mix of similar distributors, and review it again after the first season.
Lead Time, Customisation, Packaging and Trade Terms
Lead time and stock
Popular sizes of threaded ball valves, check valves and strainers are kept in semi-finished stock, so standard orders usually ship in 10 to 20 days. Custom threads, special marking or actuated assemblies need 25 to 40 days. Please confirm the thread type at the time of order, because it is fixed during machining.
Customisation
We can supply NPT, BSPT, BSPP, JIS and metric threads, special thread lengths, lockable handles, coloured handles, laser marking, lubricated threads and private-label packaging. If your equipment uses a unique connection, send a drawing or a sample for engineering review.
Packaging
- Plastic thread protectors on both ends to prevent damage
- Individual bag or foam sleeve for each valve
- Inner box with dividers, and export carton on pallet
- Carton labels showing thread type, size and material
- Customer-branded boxes and barcodes available
